Pre 9.12 Ryze was a battlemage, with low range and mobility but high durability, making him a strong duelist and splitpusher. Current Ryze is a squishy burst mage who relies on a team frontlining for him. With Riftmaker you have a bad early and mid and a bad-decent lategame. It's a fun build that works when you're better than your elo, but not on serious competition i think. Problem with Ryze Lategame is that, despite having godlike burst, DPS and AOE damage, its his range that ruins him.
